·        Any boys or girls who are looking for volunteer hours or a summer job working basketball camps see Mr. Lesperance in room 116 at some point today. Thanks.

·        The Jr. Boys Soccer team lost a thriller last night against the Riverside Rebels.  The game was tied 1 - 1 after several unbelievable saves and scoring opportunities in regulation.  The game remained tied after the boys played shut down defence throughout the 20 minutes of extra time.  This took them to the dreaded shoot out, or what soccer fans call a "coin toss" .  The guys fought hard but came up on the losing end of the shoot out and were eliminated from the playoffs.   The coaches would like to thank the team for their hard work and dedication all season.  Reminder to return your washed jersey and shorts to Mr. Steer in the Phys. Ed office by the end of the week.

·        Your Sr. Girls soccer team did Villanova proud in their SWOSSAA match against Chatham-Kent. Playing shorthanded, the girls trailed 3-0 at the half. Rather than give up, they came out on fire. McKayla Buchanan and Michelle Gomes scored for us, but despite dominating Chatham in the second half, we ran out of time and came up just short. Coaches Palermo and Corazza are very proud of the gritty performance the girls put on yesterday.  Congratulations go out to Michelle Gomes, Sarah Young, and Gabby Roberts for being voted to the WECSSAA First Team All Stars, as well as to rookie defenseman Jaylyn Cirino for making the Second Team.  Finally, a special thank you and farewell goes out to graduating seniors, and team captains,  Michelle Gomes and Sarah Young. All the best to you both.    Thanks for a great season, girls.

·        The girls softball team competed at the WECSSAA championships yesterday. They came into the tournament ranked 7th out of 12 teams. In their first game they knocked off 10th seed Riverside 15-3. Next up was 4th seed Walkerville which they easily handled 13-0, moving them on to the semi-finals. There they met 3rd seed Belle River which they beat 8-3. In the championship game your Wildcats had to face 2nd seed Essex. The game went back and forth with great defence and timely hitting but we couldn't muster enough runs and just came up short 5-3. Your Wildcats had a great tournament and fantastic season!!

·        The girls softball team took part in a 36 team tournament last week and did a fantastic job. They opened the tourney on Thursday by dropping the Titans 16-0 and followed that up with a dismantling of the RedHawks 18-3. After a night of rest they continued their dominance on Friday with a beat down of Lakeshore 17-1 and a drubbing of Dunneville 12-6. This put them in the championship game which they fought hard and battled tough but came up just short 10-9. Great tournament girls!

·        There's another team to add to the list of this year's champions. Your Sr. Girls Soccer team brought home a championship yesterday by claiming victory over our cross town rivals, the Sandwich Sabers.  A hard fought and close game was eventually won by a two to one margin thanks to strong all around play from all of the senior girls, as well as two goals by Kristen Swiatoschik. Your Wildcats will play for a SWOSSAA title next week. Wish them luck.

·        Day 2 of SWOSSAA Track was a much lighter schedule for Villanova but we still managed to add more qualifiers to next weekend's OFSAA Regionals. No first place finishes yesterday, but Mandy Brunet did manage a 2nd place finish in the Triple Jump while Aryana Cirino and Noah Renaud finished 3rd in their senior 200 meter finals. Other qualifiers for the day were: Chloe Gignac, 4th in the 200 meters, Dana Ruthven 5th in the High Jump, and Andre Tomassian, 5th in the 3000 meter race. That's now a total 15 individual events and 2 relays that Villanova will contest next weekend. Well done everyone who competed over the past 2 days. There were lots of hard fought competitions and unfortunately lots of heart breaks and close calls. We had 7 athletes miss qualifying by 1 place, some by as little as 1 cm of distance or 2 one hundreds on the clock. Full practice tonight and Monday.

·        Your Villanova Sr. Girls' Soccer team fought their way to a 2-1 victory over St. Joe's in yesterday's WECSSAA semi-final game. After giving up a goal early the girls stormed back with two outstanding goals by Kristen Swiatoschik. They protected their lead the rest of the way and earned a trip to the WECSSAA final against our cross town rivals, the Sandwich Sabres. Wish our girls luck as they play for the championship tomorrow at McHugh Park at 4pm. Way to go girls!

·        The boys baseball team won their first two games yesterday at the WECSSAA tournament. The first game, a 9-2 thumping of Holy Names, included a grand slam by Chad Matton. The second game featured Tyler "Doc" Jamieson tossing a 2 hitter for a complete game shutout. Unfortunately the boys were unable to solve the mystery that is St. Anne's, and lost their final game of the day 8-1. The boys play today at 9:30 in an all or nothing game for their bid to win the WECSSAA championship. Go get 'em Wildcats!

  • Villanova had a fantastic final day at the WECSSAA Track and Field championships, qualifying athletes in another 23 events plus 6 of our 7 relay teams.

The 4 by 100 meter relay teams started off the day right with all 5 teams moving on to SWOSSAA and silver was the colour of choice for Villanova teams. The midget girls, junior Girls, and senior boys teams all finish 2nd overall.
Next on the track were our steeplechase runners and they met the challenge of the barriers and water jump, with both of our girls, Keegan Sloan and Jessica Szawara, and one of our boys, Shaun Acrey, pushing forward.

The 100 and 200 meter finals saw Villi advancing 8 athletes into 11 spots for next weeks SWOSSA championships
. Congratulations:   Chloe Gignac, Jalyn Cirino, and Connor Rosaasen for advancing in both the 100 and 200 meters;     Kristen Swaitochuk, Viansa Guitto, and Savannah Marra for advancing in the 100m, and to Aryana Cirino and Noah Renaud for moving on in the 200m.
The other distance event for the day was the 800 meter race and once again Villanova athletes ran some personal best times to move out of WECSSAA. Connor Sloan and DJ Hall will both represent us at SWOSSAA next week.
The final races of the day saw our girls 4 by 4 team of Hannah and Aryana Cirino, Keegan Sloan and Chloe Gignac move along to SWOSSAA.

And while it was an extremely busy day on the track we had a quiter day in the field events but not unproductive. Mandy Brunet captured the silver in the triple jump and Dana Rosaasen the bronze in the shot put.
Both Samantha Boussey and Dana Ruthven qualify in the high jump, Alyssa Matton and Natalie Liolli in the javelin,
Fina Pirrone in the discus and  Matt PeBenito in the long jump

That's now 48 athletes in over 60 individual events moving on to SWOSSAA, some of our best results in a decade. Villanova placed 5th overall out of 22 teams, lead by our midget girls with a 3rd place team award
Congratulations everyone on some outstanding performances. There WILL NOT be practise tonight as originally scheduled but there is practise Monday at 1pm

·        The boys baseball team finished the regular season last night with a win over Massey. The score was 3-2 Villy in the bottom of the 5th when the game was called due to inclement weather. • Yesterday, Villanova had a very strong start at Day 1 of the WECSSAA Track and Field Championships at the University of Windsor. Already, a total of 20 athletes have secured passage to the SWOSSAA Championships next week. Tatiana Kirincic was the first on the track to move on in the 300m hurdle event. And then the flood gates opened with six 100 meter sprinters moving on to Thursdays finals. Congratulations to all 3 midget girls, Chloe Gignac, Kristen Swaitoschik, and Jalyn Cirino for advancing, as welll as Junior girls Savannah Marra and Viansa Guitto, and Senior boy Connor Rosaasen. Later, in the heat of the afternoon, long distance runners Samantha Boussey, Jessica  Szawara, Andre Tomassian, and Taylor Conte all advanced in their 1500m races. Congrats to all the 1500m runners for posting some of their fastest times of the season.
And while there was alot of excitement on the track, the field events certainly weren't quiet. 2 gold medals came out of the field events with Anca Enache winning the senior girls high jump and Midget girl Fina Pirrone walking away with the gold in the shot put event. It was a very good day in the jumping pits with all three midget girls moving on in the long jump. Congrats to Salina Secen, our silver medalist, and Mandy Brunet and Alyssa Ammonite. Other jumps qualifiers were: Madison Laramie in the Triple Jump, Alessia Fontana in the high jump, Keenan Sloan in the long jump, and senior boys Cooper Petyrysyn and Matt PeBenito, both in the high jump.
Dana Rosaasen was our final qualifier for the day in the field events with her 4th place finish in the javelin throw.

The bus leaves tomorrow at 8:30. Don't forget to bring your competition number from day 1. You'll need it to compete with.

·        The Senior Boys soccer team played in the quarter finals last night against the Catholic Central comets.  The boys kept up a good game and played cohesively throughout, seldom letting the Comets get to our end.  Nevertheless, the Comets got one up on the Wildcats before the end of the first half on a penalty kick. In the second half, Russell McLarty evened things up with a penalty kick, giving our boys some momentum to put more pressure on the Comet goalie.  Russell then took advantage of a nice pass and made a break-away to score a second goal, putting the team in high gear.  Dante Civiero kept up the energy with another great breakaway, scoring what would eventually become the game-winning goal for the Wildcats as the Comets were able to sneak in another goal just before the end of the game. Goal-keeper Thomas Swiatoschik did great work putting a stop to some solid kicks at the net.  Jon Grebe also defended furtively, getting to the ball at opportune moments to shatter hopes for the Comets.  All the boys deserve recognition for their great work in, once again, extreme weather conditions!  Congratulations, Wildcats!  Stay strong for the semi-finals this Wednesday against Riverside on their field.

·        4 days and counting. That's all that's left until the WECSSAA Track and Field Championships begin, South Western Ontario's largest track meet. Practise as usual tonight, Friday night and Saturday morning at 11am.  Great job to everyone on last night's final seeding meet. No final results are available at this time but Villanova had plenty of great performances on the track, in the jumping pits and in the throwing zones. The senior boys soccer team had a tough go last night against the Riverside Rebels; once again the boys played in miserable weather conditions.   The Rebels put up a strong effort right and did not let up while the Wildcats had about a half a dozen of their players on the bench with injuries by the end of the second half.  Goalie, Thomas Swiatoschik, deserves recognition for staying in the game as he bore the brunt of the Rebel fury but maintained his spirit.  Final score:  Riverside - 5, Villanova - 0.  Playoffs start next Monday.

A reminder to Mr. Strong's leadership classes to take first lunch and then report to portable 1.

The girl’s softball team had a great day of action on Friday. With great base running, solid hitting and exceptional fielding they were able to easily defeat previously undefeated Leamington 15-2. They followed that up later in the day with another great performance and trounced Essex 15-3. They look to add to their winning streak when they play Sandwich tomorrow. Go Wildcats!!

The chess club will meet tomorrow after school in room 132. Everyone, especially new members welcome.

There is plenty of room for fourth period classes to come out to cheer on the boy’s baseball team in their game against Sandwich Tuesday afternoon. The cost is 2 dollars a student on a whole class basis. Have your teacher email Mr. Hamelin to reserve your spot.

Students attending the DIA trip are reminded to bring a copy of their proof of extended health insurance to Ms. Bastien.

Villanova athletes spent a lot of time on the podium Friday Night at the Kennedy Relays meet. Chloe Gignac made her 1st trip to the podium to claim the silver medal in the 100m. Fina Pirrone stepped up next to claim the silver in the midget girl’s shot put event. Next our midget girls relay team of Tatiana Kirinic, Chloe Gignac, Jalyn Cironi, and Mandy Brunet, stepped up to claim the gold medal in the girls 4 by 100m. Finally the midget boys relay team of Quinn Vandehoeven, Reed Renaud, Connor Sloan, and Keenan Spence had the silver medals placed around their necks for the 4 by 100. Great meet everyone!! One week until the WECSSAA track and field championships
